Kandinsky at AGNSW

Cindy Tonkin - December 8, 2023

Cathie and I popped into the Art Gallery to see Kandinsky.

Here are my photos.

Like with the Duchamp exhibition a few years ago, I’m looking at it going “So what”, because first of all Kandinsky is so ubiquitous, I have seen many of his works in Chicago and New York, and people have borrowed his imagery to make their own movies and shows and such, which means it’s normal. there was an element of disappointment to see the originals, many of which were faded over time.

He did live in many countries (France, Russia, etc) and lived through very hard times – WWII and its aftermath. I really enjoyed his work more the older he got, so that’s good news for me as I age (even if I look back at works I made years ago and think how good they are. I’m mostly not making big pieces or paintings anymore, so how would I know?).

Towards the end of his career, he had difficulty sourcing/paying for materials, so he experimented with new paints and supports.
