Make graceful and lasting change

Brilliance

Cindy Tonkin - September 13, 2024

This is an altered book from my collection of “picked up in the street” books.

It used to house a heap of quotes about and from women.

I’ve filled it with gelli / monoprints which I’ve coloured over with paint markers and sharpies (this is my current thing).

It also includes some cricut-cut windows. for this i used pages from the 100 Masterpieces of Australian Art I firstly cut up and then found again in the street (it was meant to be). I do love the Australian colours in it – our light is different from European light, and so we have more blue greys and grey greens in our landscape painting, and a lot of the book is landscape paintings.

The poem is one of a collection I’ve been amassing. It’s Kindness, by Naomi Shihab Nye. I typed the words on my actual typewriter, an orange Chevron portable typewriter, which has keys that stick (less now I’ve cleaned it) and no ribbon, so i had to use faded carbon paper (who knew you could still buy carbon paper?).
