Nicola gave me these books to alter. They have deckle edges, are on beautiful creamy paper and already have some foxing. The illustrations are great little etchings, so it was a challenge to decide how to alter them.
This is a set of 5.
So far I’ve folded pages in and inserted envelopes. Today I made triangular books to complement the 45 degree angle of the folds.
My plan:
- find a lovely coloured card to go with the spines of the books (maroon, grey, navy? Let’s see what’s in my stationery storage!)
- use that card to make covers for the extra triangle books
- use the same card to make inserts for the envelopes (which may have lines from the books: there are many good ones)
- make a box so it’s a “boxed set”
I’m sure there’s more, but that’s a good start!
Update one week later:
one week later I found an excellent crimson paper with elephants and peacocks on it (Linda gave me this paper years ago for a Christmas present maybe ten years ago). I’ve made covers for all of the triangular books, and begun inserts for the envelopes in the same crimson.
I like the crimson because it sets off the formal navies and maroons of the bindings. And because it has a child-like quality to it (after all, Lemony Snicket is a children’s book series).
Also experimenting with my circular hole punch (bought on special at kmart recently… loving that it was only $2: the large circular punch I bought for a fortune years ago doesn’t work, this one does!). Making book mark-like inserts which stick out a little from the book itself. More to go.
