This series is part of an exercise in composition.
For each of the “inspired” themed works I take a master and then copy its composition in collage.
The idea is to really get to know the painting, and to make me better at making works. It is quite interesting what happens when I recreate a work in different forms multiple times.
Process-wise, i do this.
- find a work
- copy its composition in collage. Do this 3 to 5 times till i get bored – each one, hopefully, getting better
- spin off, theme and variations style and make other works (e.g. with the Nighthawks one I combined jugs and jars from the Ozenfant still life, so the people became jugs and jars.
- Use the offcuts to make something else.
- Rinse and repeat
I’m really enjoying the different things that come out of it. All of the images in the series below are using up old paper stocks of A4 paper and card as a base, and then origami and other papers I’ve collected but not used. It’s a constant surprise.
