Magritte at the AGNSW 2024

Cindy Tonkin - December 11, 2024

Popped into see the Magritte (images below).

Here are my thoughts. Some of these things I’ve not seen before but the tone of the work has permeated so much of the world I’ve lived in. many of my own collages are in fact surreal, especially the elephant head collage that Maisie has a coffee cup because it tickled her fancy so much as a 10 year old. While my work isn’t designed to “Say” anything as such, it probably does to an outside eye. maybe I could review my collages and find some themes in retrospect?

His later works, as is often the case, seemed less pushing the boundaries, but enjoying himself nonetheless. the man with the bowler hat is so ubiquitous, who knew it was magritte who started it (did he?)

I took a few other photos while i was at the gallery – a ken done which they are in the process of acquiring puzzled me from across the room. I knew the style but couldn’t name the painter – because it was on beach towels and curtains I first saw it, and seeing it in a frame surprised me. but it’s kinda matisse-esque. maybe it’s time for me to go back to matisse-inspired collage again, maybe go bigger this time?
