I’m away this week for Nicola’s birthday.
I recently went “shopping” in my wardrobe for a “vintage” handbag (my own, abandoned maybe 20 years ago).
An external zipper had broken, and i had never liked the lining.
So today I re-did it.
Removed the lining.
Removed the broken zipper.
Added in some polka dots – orange on the front zipper part and the zipper pocket where I put my car keys, and black and tan inside.
It’s not perfect, but it’s a new thing.
I removed all of the inside pockets because I find them annoying anyway, and will add a few more pouches and pencil cases on the inside of the handbag to make up for the lack of pockets.
The black and tan dots are in face an old daiso bag I happened to have with me – Marian gave me some input that maybe the orange polka dot fabric would not be robust enough to hold stuff, although the old fabric looked to be similar when i eventually did pull it out.
I feel good about it.
I think i could do it more, some ideas:
- better or more robust stitching (right now mostly running stitch)
- braid on the front zipper bit (right now I have tacked it where the machine stitched holes were, but i could maybe chain stitch through the stitching or add a decorative bit with glue)
- actual leather pieces where the current dot gap is on the front zipper bit (i have so many part of old boots etc I have kept, I’d find something; also have blue/black left over from the captain’s chair)
