Shanty lyrics are all over the place on the internet. Here are some good places to find them;
- Forty Degrees South (our friends Margaret, Tom and Don come regularly Redfern and etc)
- The Stranded Wailers Songbook (our friends in Tasmania)
- Kiama Shanty Club songbook (our sister club in Kiama, NSW) and their spotify playlist
- Aunty Shanties (in the UK)
- Mainly Norfolk (also UK)
- Shanties and Sea Songs (from the US)
Please be aware that we do not sing racist songs or slavery songs at Redfern Shanty Club – we change or delete some verses, and some we just do not sing because they have not stood the test of time. If in doubt, don’t sing it until you’ve heard our version from someone else, or check with the Captain.
If you want to hear the shanties on Spotify, then try these sources:
- The Top Ten from Redfern Shanty Club in a Spotify playlist
- The Longest Johns are a constant source of new shants people bring along
- The Misbehavin’ Maidens if you want songs in women’s keys!
- Write your own. See some tips I’ve written here.
We have begun to assemble the original songs from the Randy Dandy Shanties umbrella of Shanty clubs. Find it here.
